In a year that saw Apple dethrone Samsung to become the top smartphone vendor for the first time ever, many of the American technology giant’s iPhone models also made their own mark in the category they were in.
According to market-research firm Canalys, seven of the top 10 shipped handsets worldwide in 2023 were from Apple. This despite its devices selling at a premium. Not that we’re surprised, because iPhones have consistently been the most popular smartphones for years now. The other three devices on the list were from Samsung. No products from other brands were able to enter the top 10.
The bestselling mobile was the iPhone 14 Pro Max with 34 million units shipped, marking the first year an iPhone Pro variant landed first in the annual ranking of most shipped phone models. Canalys says the development reflects the market’s shift towards premium devices.
Following closely behind Apple’s most expensive model in 2022 was the iPhone 15 Pro Max with 33 million shipments. We consider that a remarkable feat, because the said unit was launched only in September 2023. Recall that the iPhone 15 series was initially available in 40 countries and regions starting September 22.
The oldest iPhone version that made it to the list was the Apple iPhone 13, which debuted in September 2021 with starting prices of $799 before taxes in the United States and P50,990 in the Philippines. The handset took the fifth spot with 23 million units shipped.
Only Samsung’s Galaxy A14 4G, Galaxy A54 5G, and Galaxy A14 5G were able to break into the 2023 ranking.
