Just as expected, Xiaomi has announced two new entry-grade Redmi smartphones in India — one equipped with a 5G modem, whereas the other is a lower-priced model that is limited to 4G connectivity.
(Update, September 12: This is when the Redmi 12 is launching in the Philippines!)
The latest models from Xiaomi’s Redmi sub-brand succeed the Redmi 10 series from 2021. Believe it or not, there was no Redmi 11 last year, for reasons that probably have something to do with the industry’s ridiculously competitive low-end segment. And no, these devices shouldn’t be confused with the Redmi Note 12 series, which debuted in the Philippines and other markets earlier this year.
The newly launched Redmi 12 4G comes in two storage variants, while the Redmi 12 5G is available in three configurations. Although the latter is coming to India first, an identical model with a Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 5G chip under the hood, the Redmi Note 12R, launched in China last June.
It’s likely that Xiaomi will also rebrand the phone as the POCO M6 Pro 5G with minor visual changes for other markets. In India, the Redmi 12 4G and Redmi 12 5G will go on sale from August 4 and are priced as follows:
- Redmi 12 4G
- 4GB/128GB: ₹8,999 (around P6,003 or $109)
- 6GB/128GB: ₹10,499 (P7,003 or $128)
- Redmi 12 5G
- 4GB/128GB: ₹11,999 (P8,004 or $146)
- 6GB/128GB: ₹12,499 (P8,338 or $152)
- 8GB/256GB: ₹14,499 (P9,672 or $176)
The Redmi 12 5G has many specs similar to the 4G version, and both have a glass back panel and metallic rims surrounding their rear camera lenses, giving them a more premium look and feel. The major difference between the two is the chipset and inclusion of a 5G modem in the Redmi 12 5G.
While the Redmi 12 4G is powered by a 12nm MediaTek Helio G88 chipset, which we’ve seen in several other budget phones over the past couple of years, the 5G variant debuts as the segment’s first global model built around the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 platform. It is the first Snapdragon 4 series chip that uses a 4nm process node for improved performance and power efficiency.
Elsewhere, both Redmi 12 variants have a 6.79-inch 90Hz LCD display and a 5,000mAh battery that supports USB-C fast charging up to 18 watts. For pictures, the two share a 50-megapixel primary camera.
