Xiaomi will release a new budget smartphone in the Philippines under its Redmi sub-brand, we at Revü have learned.
The Redmi A2 Plus, the successor to the Redmi A1 Plus, brings a more capable processor for faster everyday performance. The design hasn’t changed, though, so the new model is virtually identical to the previous one, right down to the LCD display, camera module at the back, and placement of the physical fingerprint reader.
In the Philippines, the Redmi A2 Plus carries a suggested retail price of P4,599 or roughly $84 for 3GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 64GB of internal storage. It comes in Light Green, Light Blue, and Black colors. Recall that the standard Redmi A1 with 2GB RAM and 32GB storage was originally priced at P4,499 ($82) locally.
We’ll save you the trouble of comparing specs sheets and say that the most notable change here is the chipset. The Redmi A2 Plus upgrades to an octa-core MediaTek Helio G36 processor from last year’s quad-core Helio A22 chip. However, despite the spec bump, the A2 Plus still runs the Go edition of Android 12, which Google developed specifically for devices with limited hardware.
The battery capacity remains the same at 5,000mAh and charges over a microUSB port at 10 watts. It’s still good for 626 hours of standby, 28 hours of calling, and 19 hours of video playback, though. For pictures, you get an 8-megapixel main camera on the rear and a 5-megapixel shooter for selfies.
