Samsung once again topped the tablet market in the Philippines in the first quarter of 2023, holding on to the first spot for three consecutive quarters.
This is based on the latest data shared by market-research company International Data Corporation.
The Korean technology giant captured 19.6% of the market, closely followed by China’s Lenovo with an 18.1% unit share. Huawei, which just released the MatePad 11 2023 in May, took the third spot with a 15.3% share.
Cherry Mobile dropped from second place to No. 4 with an 11.6% market share. Recall that the local brand dominated the category in the second quarter of 2022, thanks to tenders from local government units and the Department of Education.
realme, which was toppled from the top in the local smartphone segment after lording it over the category for two consecutive years, fell to the fifth position.
According to IDC Philippines, the country’s tablet market suffered the same fate as the smartphone space in Q1 2023. It declined 26.6% year over year and 46.7% quarter over quarter.
Angela Medez, Client Devices Senior Market Analyst at the market-research firm’s Philippine unit, said, “It has been two years since quarterly tablet shipments have dropped below 200,00 units, a pattern concurrent to the Philippines smartphone market, which hit a three-year low in the same quarter.”
Expect annual tablet shipments to return to pre-pandemic levels below 1 million units now that procurements among DepEd divisions and LGUs have abated.
