After launching the ZTE Axon 20 5G last year as the world’s first commercially available phone with an under-display camera, the Chinese technology company is back at it again with the phone’s refresh.
ZTE today announced the ZTE Axon 30 5G for the Chinese market, although the manufacturer says a global model “will be available soon.” The Axon 30 introduces several cosmetic and performance upgrades, including a higher pixel density of 400ppi and better light transmittance for the under-screen camera area.
The latter should result in better pictures taken with the front-facing sensor. You might recall that the Axon 20 was criticized for its camera output, particularly those shot with the under-display cam.
The ZTE Axon 30 5G is also the first smartphone that combines an under-screen camera with a 120Hz refresh rate and 360Hz touch sampling. The 6.92-inch AMOLED display features a cinematic aspect ratio of 20.5:9 and covers the full DCI-P3 color gamut. It supports 10-bit color depth as well as DC dimming to reduce visual fatigue caused by screen flicker.

At the back, you get a 64-megapixel main camera, joined by an ultra-wide option, a 3cm macro lens, and a depth sensor for portraits. For video, there’s two-way video stabilization for the main and ultra-wide cameras that promises to minimize video-shooting jitters.
Elsewhere, the Axon 30 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 processor with a 5G modem. It’s also equipped with a 4,200mAh battery and 55-watt fast wired charging.
In China, the ZTE Axon 30 5G is available in black and green colors. Local price starts at ¥2,198 (around P17,066 in Philippine pesos and $338 in U.S. dollars) for 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. It goes as high as ¥3,098 (P24,018 or $476) for the 12GB/256GB variant. The first-sale date is August 3.
