As promised, Xiaomi announced the Redmi K40 series, the successor to the Redmi K30 and K30 Pro, at an event in China. The announcement includes the Redmi K40, K40 Pro, and top-end K40 Pro Plus.

Alongside the new lineup, Xiaomi also launched its new RedmiBook Pro 14 and RedmiBook Pro 15 laptops, as well as the 86-inch Redmi Max TV and Redmi AirDots 3 wireless earbuds at the event.

All three phones in the series sport a small punch-hole at the center of the screen; triple rear optics in a rectangular camera module reminiscent of the Mi 11’s; a 6.67-inch E4 AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate; a side-mounted fingerprint reader; a 4,520mAh battery with 33-watt wired fast charging; and, of course, MIUI 12.5 based on Android 11. Unsurprisingly, they tout 5G capabilities as well.

The Redmi K40 Pro and Redmi K40 Pro Plus have emerged as two of the most affordable Qualcomm Snapdragon 888-based options on the market, whereas the standard K40 is only the second smartphone to get Qualcomm’s new 7nm Snapdragon 870 chip after the Motorola Edge S. It’s priced the same as the Edge S in China, too.

Besides using a more advanced and powerful processor compared to the Snapdragon 870-powered Redmi K40, the K40 Pro carries a 64-megapixel Quad-Bayer Sony IMX686 sensor, the same unit found in the Redmi K30, ASUS ROG Phone 3, and POCO X2. The K40 Pro Plus upgrades to a 108-megapixel Samsung Isocell HM2 sensor.

How much are the Redmi K40, Redmi K40 Pro, and Redmi K40 Pro Plus?

The prices of the Redmi K40, K40 Pro, and K40 Pro Plus in China are set as follows:

  • 8GB/128GB: ¥2,199 (P16,593 or $340)
  • 8GB/256GB: ¥2,499 (P18,857 or $386)

• Redmi K40 Pro
  • 6GB/128GB: ¥2,799 (P21,120 or $433)
  • 8GB/128GB: ¥2,999 (P22,629 or $464)
  • 8GB/256GB: ¥3,299 (P24,893 or $510)
• Redmi K40 Pro Plus
  • 12GB/256GB: ¥3,699 (P27,911 or $572)

All three phones are available in three color options. The K40 and K40 Pro are scheduled to hit stores March 4, while the K40 Pro Plus will arrive at local retail by end-March. However, global pricing and availability details are yet to be revealed.

Xiaomi Philippines hasn’t teased the phones, so the wait might be longer than shorter — if there are any plans for a domestic release at all. It’s also worth mentioning that Xiaomi didn’t release the K20 and K30 series phones here. But then again, any one of them might be released as a rebranded POCO phone in the Philippines and other countries.
