Almost two weeks after the Reno 5 and Reno 5 Pro 5G phones were launched, the series’ most premium member has been announced, too.
OPPO just took the wraps off the OPPO Reno 5 Pro Plus 5G in China, setting the handset’s availability for December 29. The base model, which has 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, is priced at ¥3,999 (around P29,415 or $612 converted). The version with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, on the other hand, is going on sale for ¥4,499 (P33,093 or $689). This variant has a special edition made in collaboration with popular artist Joshua Vides, and it will be released starting January 22, 2021.

Today’s launch of the Reno 5 Pro Plus marks the debut of the Sony IMX766 sensor, which has 1.0μm pixel and 1/1.56-inch sensor sizes. It can supposedly take in 63.8% more light than the Sony IMX586, which, if true, should make it great for shooting in the dark.
IMX766 makes use of Sony’s “digital overlay high dynamic range” or DOL-HDR technology, allowing for better images even when taken against a bright background. There’s the 2×2 OCL [on-chip lens] tech for achieving fast focus and high dynamic range and sensitivity. Optical and electronic image-stabilization features are present, too.
The 50-megapixel main camera is paired with a 16-megapixel ultra-wide-angle shooter, a 13-megapixel telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom, and a hybrid macro sensor. On the upper-left side of the OPPO Reno 5 Pro Plus 5G’s 6.55-inch curved, 90Hz OLED screen, on the other hand, is a 32-megapixel selfie camera inside a punch hole.

Powering the Plus model is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chip. The device likewise features an in-display fingerprint sensor, a 4,500mAh battery that supports 65 watts of fast charging, and Android 11-based ColorOS 11.
But of course, one of the highlights of the OPPO Reno 5 Pro Plus 5G is the material used for its rear panel. Its look may not stray from that of the Reno 4 series, but the material is said to be an upgrade from the previous one.
Will OPPO Philippines bring one — or all — of the smartphones here in the first quarter of 2021? The OPPO Reno 3 and Reno 3 Pro arrived late in the first half of the year because of strict COVID-19 measures. With restrictions getting more relaxed now, we might just see a Reno 5 launch here earlier than expected.
