Apple has sent out invites to a September 15 event it’s streaming live on its website. What could the world’s most valuable publicly traded company be launching next week?
(Update, September 16: Here are all the devices Apple launched plus their prices in the Philippines!)
If we are to look at the past years, we could have already said — confidently at that — that it’s finally announcing the Apple iPhone 12 series. In September last year, it unveiled the iPhone 11 models alongside the Apple Watch Series 5 and 10.2-inch iPad. In September 2018, Apple introduced the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, and Apple Watch Series 4.
In fact, some say the “Time Flies” phrase in the Apple invitation refers to the iPhone 12’s time-of-flight sensor. A report by Bloomberg says otherwise.
According to the international news agency’s Mark Gurman, who correctly reported that the date of Apple’s September special event will be announced today, September 9, the virtual launch on September 15 will focus on the Apple Watch (Series 6?) and redesigned iPad Air with an edge-to-edge screen.
Recall that during the company’s fiscal third-quarter 2020 earnings call, Apple chief financial officer Luca Maestri revealed that this year’s iPhones will be released a few weeks later than usual.
The statement led many to believe they were the ones Qualcomm had referred to when the chipmaker highlighted in its latest earnings report “a partial impact from the delay of a global 5G flagship phone launch” for its fourth-quarter projections. Apple is, of course, a client of Qualcomm.
Before that, there were already rumors that the the lineup’s production was delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
If ever, the setback is only “a few weeks,” though, so we expect the Apple iPhone 12 units to be launched in October (update: as now seemingly corroborated by this leak by reliable tipster Evan Blass, popularly known as @evleaks on Twitter, which states that the preorder for the iPhone 12 5G will end October 30). Deep inside, we’re still hoping that the September 15 event will still make the smartphones official, even if shipping gets pushed back to a later date.
