If you look at the smartphone pictured above without reading the signage beside it, you’d think you’re checking out the newly launched LG Velvet at first glance. But no, it’s actually an OPPO phone — one that has not been announced, in fact. It’s just that the vertically placed rectangular camera module has the same color as its body.

The device in the photo is allegedly the OPPO Reno 4, which has been rumored to go official in China this month of May. Recall that its predecessor was first unveiled there in December. But don’t keep your hopes up of officially getting it here in the Philippines at any time soon, as the global variants of the OPPO Reno 3 and Reno 3 Pro have just been released in the country.

We had thought the latter’s successor would be called “OPPO Reno 5.” Take note that the number “4” is considered bad luck because it sounds like the word “death” in Chinese. However, it seems we had thought wrong. Or we’re really right and OPPO is just using “Reno 4” for product demonstrations, which seems to be the case here?

Let’s pretend the name’s really “OPPO Reno 4.” So what do we expect from it? Well, there seems to be four sensors on the back. The front-facing camera on the Chinese model of the Reno 3 is 32 megapixels, so this one should have a 32-megapixel selfie shooter at the very least. Someone has shared supposed renders of the device on Twitter a month ago. Look.

Alleged OPPO Reno 4

The previous model launched with an octa-core MediaTek Dimensity 1000L inside. We’re guessing the newly announced MediaTek Dimensity 1000 Plus with support for 5G and screens with a refresh rate of up to 144Hz will be used here.

Coincidentally, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 768G 5G got official today, May 11. Could it mean that the OPPO Reno 4 Pro, if there is one, will be powered by the said processor, which is an upgrade from the 765G used by the Reno 3 Pro? Just speculating here.
