Samsung launched the Galaxy S20 Ultra, along with the Galaxy S20 and S20 Plus, more than two months ago. However, it’s only today that image-quality ratings site DxOMark published its review of Samsung‘s flagship phone’s camera system.
Did it topple the Huawei P40 Pro, the current No. 1 in DxOMark’s leaderboard? No, the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra didn’t. Its overall score of 122 is the same as that of the Honor V30 Pro, but it’s still solid — enough for the device to land fifth place.
The only other handsets besides the Huawei P40 Pro that have higher marks than the S20 Ultra are the Honor 30 Pro Plus, OPPO Find X2 Pro, Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro, and Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G. At least for smartphones that have already been reviewed by the website.
The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra got a photo score of 132, what with its great handling of colors, dynamic range, noise, and exposure and detail when using flash. It even achieved the highest rating for its ultra-wide camera.
According to DxOMark, “Ultra-wide exposure and color are mainly accurate in all lighting conditions, and an expansive field of view ensures you can fit loads into the frame, with geometric distortion well corrected to keep lines straight.”
For videos, the Galaxy S20 Ultra notched a 102 mark, mainly because of how it manages noise, outdoor colors, stabilization in handheld static videos outside, and target exposure even in low light. You can read the full review here. Of course, as with all tests, this is only a guide; in the end, it’s all about your taste in photography and videography that will determine if you like how a device takes pictures and videos.
