It seems that the successor to the “budget iPhone” that was launched in 2016 won’t be called the Apple iPhone 9 or iPhone SE 2, after all.

(Update, April 16: And it’s launched! Read 2020 Apple iPhone SE is here. Philippine prices announced, too.)

A case listing on Apple‘s site itself plus an exclusive report by a publication covering all things Apple indicate that the handset the company is supposedly launching this month is simply called the Apple iPhone SE.

A Belkin screen protector for three iPhone models — iPhone 7, iPhone 8, and iPhone SE — has been spotted on the Apple online store. You can’t say that this is the same SE unit that was released in 2016 because that one looks like the iPhone 5 and 5S.

Take note that the 2020 Apple iPhone SE‘s design has long been rumored to be similar to that of the iPhone 8. Case in point…

Sources of 9to5Mac also seem to corroborate the possibility that the name of the device is iPhone SE indeed.

We won’t be surprised if this turns out to be true because current Apple products like the 2020 variants of the MacBook Air and iPad Pro have taken the names of their predecessors.

According to 9to5Mac, the color variants available for the 2020 Apple iPhone SE include white, black, and red. There are supposedly five cases — white silicone, black silicone, red leather, midnight blue leather, and black leather. And you can choose from 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB storage options.

Previous leaks said the “affordable iPhone” uses an Apple Bionic A13, the same chip that powers the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max. So while the design may hark back to years ago, the performance should easily put the smartphone at the top of the charts.

Earlier reports also claimed the 2020 Apple iPhone SE will be priced starting at either $349 (around P17,729 in Philippine pesos) or $399 (P20,269). In the Philippines, the cheapest 2016 iPhone SE model cost P23,590 ($464) at launch.
