So you can live with the notch? How about two notches? No, we’re not kidding. There really is a newly announced smartphone that features a 5.2-inch screen with two cutouts — one at the top and the other at the bottom. Meet the Sharp Aquos R2 Compact.
Sharp Aquos R2 Compact: Essential Phone-like notch at the top for the camera and narrower iPhone-like cutout at the bottom for the fingerprint sensor
But why oh why, you may ask. Remember last year’s Aquos R Compact? That device with a humongous bezel at the base of the display? Sharp explains it needed to get rid of the huge bezel of the original R Compact model for an increase in the successor’s screen-to-body ratio while still retaining the front-mounted fingerprint reader.
Surprisingly, the Sharp Aquos R2 Compact looks so much better than its predecessor. At least in our eyes.
It may be small, but the smartphone has the specs of a premium device. We’re talking about a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor matched with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, Android 9.0 Pie, and 22.6-megapixel and 8-megapixel rear and front cameras.
And its screen? It packs an impressive 2,280 x 1,080 resolution and — get this — offers a 120Hz refresh rate, just like the Razer Phone and Razer Phone 2! Nice.
Unfortunately for those who want to at least see the Sharp Aquos R2 Compact, its availability next year will most likely be limited to Japan.
