It’s but a natural progression for smartphones to eventually adopt a triple-camera setup at the back, just like the top-rated Huawei P20 Pro, because of advantages like enhanced low-light, image-detail, optical-zoom, wide-angle, and 3D-depth capabilities. We’ve heard Apple will be doing that. Today, that rumor gains ground with a report citing a research note from Deutsche Securities analyst Jialin Lu.

According to Taiwanese website Economic Daily News, Lu says at least one iPhone 2019 model will have three rear cameras to enable advanced 3D sensing via stereoscopic vision. Two of the sensors will capture images of an object from different angles, and the distance between the iPhone and that particular object will then be calculated through triangulation method.
This is supposedly in a bid to make the Apple iPhone the top device for augmented reality, with both the front (as seen on the iPhone X‘s TrueDepth system) and rear camera setups being given 3D-sensing capabilities.

We won’t be surprised if this AR bit turns out to be true, considering that Apple CEO Tim Cook is a big proponent of it. Last year, the company opened its ARKit platform to developers, allowing them to make AR apps for iOS 11 devices.

Anyhow, the report also mentions Lu saying that the upcoming iPhone’s third lens will likely sport a longer focal length. This is to equip the smartphone with 3x optical zoom, so you’ll be able to zoom in on a subject by up to three times without losing image quality.
If Lu’s right, then that particular iPhone will hold the distinction of being the first Apple handset to include the feature. The Apple iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone 7 Plus have 2x optical zoom.
