A little more than a week ago, Xiaomi announced the Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro in India, which was an interesting move considering the brand, in case you didn’t know, is based in China, and has typically launched new products in its home turf.

Yet it appears to have worked out splendidly for the electronics manufacturer. According to a tweet by Manu Kumar Jain, Xiaomi’s managing director in India, they had sold over 300,000 units of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro within 3 minutes through ecommerce sites Mi.com and Flipkart, in what was the company’s biggest sale in India to date.

Stocks had run out during the first sale period earlier in the day. The second batch for the Indian market is expected to go on sale on February 28, 2018, while the rest of the world will have to wait until later in the year to snag these hotly anticipated 18:9 phones.

As a refresher, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro both arrive with 6-inch displays running at full resolution, as well as Snapdragon chipsets and high-capacity 4,000mAh batteries. Expectedly, the Pro version is kitted with better specs, more notably an industry-first Snapdragon 636 processor and dual main cameras. It’s also priced ₹2,000 (around P1,600 or $30) more than the 4GB RAM model of the Redmi Note 5.

In India, you can pick up the base Redmi Note 5 — a rebranded Redmi 5 Plus — with 3GB of RAM for ₹9,999 (P8,003 or $154). The 4GB RAM and 6GB RAM editions of the Redmi Note 5 Pro go for ₹13,999 (P11,190 or $215) and ₹16,999 (P13,588 or $262), respectively.

It was previously reported that Xiaomi had dethroned Samsung to emerge as the number one smartphone vendor in India in the quarter ending December 2017. Interestingly, Xiaomi’s dominance was attributed to strong offline traction, having sold more than 200 million units on the retail market last quarter. India is the world’s second-largest smartphone market behind only China, data from research firms Canalys and Counterpoint shows.
