Another day, another ASUS ZenFone breaks cover. Or so it seems.
A device with model number ASUS X00RD has been spotted on cross-platform-processor benchmark Geekbench. It’s not a high-end smartphone; the listing reveals that while it runs Android 8.1 Oreo, it is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor and only has 1GB of RAM. The single- and multi-core scores show as much.
And if you think about it, the quad-core chip supports screen resolutions of up to 1280 × 800, so the ASUS X00RD’s display is most likely just 720p.
This leads us to believe that this is an Android Go device. Android Go, if you remember, was announced at the Google I/O 2017 developer conference in May 2017. It is a stripped-down version of Android, meant to run on basic phones. Even the preinstalled Google apps that come with it — apps such as Assistant Go, Maps Go, and YouTube Go — are lightweight as well.

If true, then ASUS will join a number of companies that will be launching Android Go devices, the most recent of which is believed to be HMD Global with the Nokia 1.

Will the ASUS X00RD be announced alongside the ASUS ZenFone 5 and ZenFone 5 Lite at MWC 2018 this month? Will the Taiwanese manufacturer call it the ASUS ZenFone Go 2018? And will it release the entry-level handset in price-sensitive Philippines? Guess we’ll find out some of the answers to these questions soon enough.
