Pop question: How many lenses do you think your next smartphone should have? One? Two? How about five?
Nokia is reportedly working on a phone that will have a penta-lens setup, a leaked image via Chinese website Baidu showed. We can see eight holes arrayed at the back of the device, though only five of them are said to house camera sensors and lenses. The other circles might be for a laser auto-focus unit, an LED flash, and a fingerprint reader. Your guess is as good as ours at the moment.
Word is the phone in question is the Nokia 10, which will be offered later this year, possibly months after the announcement of the Nokia 9 flagship. The latter could be headed to Barcelona this year, taking the stage to lead the roster of Nokia phones at the Mobile World Congress trade show.
Recently, HMD Global chief product officer Juho Sarvikas tweeted that we can expect something “awesome” from the company at MWC 2018. Lest you forget, HMD Global is the new-ish custodian of the Nokia brand.

Anyhow, what’s also interesting is that the source of the tip might be Foxconn, which manufactures mobile devices for different companies, including Apple and HMD Global. As for the alleged penta-lens camera system, the Nokia 10 could be adopting the approach of the $1,950 (almost P100,000) Light L16 camera, combining 16 — yes, 16! — individual sensors (one for each scenario) into one design.

If that is indeed the case — and the pictures turn out to be nothing short of fantastic — the Nokia 10 may end up as one of the most memorable phones in recent memory, which is saying a lot.

Additionally, the source claims the smartphone will launch with a high-end Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, which technically can handle up to seven cameras, with support for up to a 32-megapixel sensor with dual-phase detection and 4K video recording. Keeping up with current trends, it will likely sport a taller, 18:9 screen as well.
