Who are the winners in the technology industry this year? The projected numbers are in, and if there’s one takeaway here, it’s that there’s one runaway winner.
According to market-research firm GBH Insights, the iPhone is once again the top-selling tech product of 2017. The sales of Apple’s cash cow will reach 223 million units by end-December, up from 211 million smartphones in 2016.

On September 12, the Cupertino-based tech giant introduced three iPhones — the iPhone 8, the iPhone 8 Plus, and the most expensive one to date, the iPhone X — to help turn around its declining sales in 2016. While 211 million is still a huge number, it’s nothing like 2015’s 230 million.
The year 2015 has been Apple’s best thus far, when it released a redesigned iPhone with a large variant. We’re talking about the iPhone 6 and its big brother, the iPhone 6 Plus, of course.

Daniel Ives, a GBH Insights analyst, believes that Apple will have a more successful 2018, thanks to an expected iPhone SE update in the first half of the year. He says that “out of the billion-plus consumer base of the iPhone, 350 million of them will upgrade next year.”

Coming in at a distant second is Samsung’s Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, and Note 8. The Korean is forecast to move 33 million of those Galaxy phones by December 31, 2017.
Samsung’s flagship are followed by the Amazon Echo Dot; another Apple product, the Apple Watch; and the Nintendo Switch, which are expected to achieve sales of 24 million, 20 million, and 15 million units, respectively. Check out this chart prepared by GBH Insights for USA Today.
