The Find series is OPPO’s flagship lineup, but it’s been almost three years since we’ve seen a new Find smartphone. The Find 7, which was released in early 2014 for P25,990 in the Philippines and $599 in other markets, was one of the last. A pity, really, because it was one of the most advanced devices at the time. It was not the kind that would sell like pancakes. After all, it was priced high for something that’s coming from a brand that people were not familiar with. But its powerful specs, Quad HD screen, and VOOC fast-charging system made it a stand-out. Hence, people’s expectations for another one that will again push smartphone boundaries.

We waited… and waited… and waited. But the successor has not come yet.
OPPO now concentrates on the mid-range market, where it has finally found its niche. The focus is on the F series, with a tag line that has caught on that when people can’t remember the exact model that they’re looking for, they say, “It’s a ‘selfie expert’ phone.” In the country, the latest is the P12,990 OPPO F1s Limited, a gray variant that was announced alongside Alden Richards as OPPO Philippines’ newest endorser.
And then came the rumor this week saying that the OPPO Find 9 is finally coming, and it will be powered by Qualcomm’s latest and greatest, Snapdragon 835. The chipset is said to be 27 percent more powerful, 30 percent smaller, and 40 percent more energy-efficient than Snapdragon 820. It already features Quick Charge 4.0, but OPPO will most likely use Super VOOC, the fast-charging system it announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, last year. Super VOOC can charge a phone with 2,500mAh battery from zero to full in just 15 minutes.

And then came the same source of that rumor claiming that the Find 9 will arrive “longer than expected.”
So what is it, really?
Our sources say that OPPO will be exhibiting at MWC 2017, which will happen from February 27 to March 2. In fact, invites have already been sent to some journalists. So what is the company going to announce there if not for the OPPO Find 9? Another technology? A new smartphone series?

Our money is still on the Find 9. But if it turns out we’re wrong, then we’re hoping that whatever it will be, it will be something that’s trailblazing. OPPO is already doing well — so well that it has snagged the No. 4 spot in the global smartphone market. All it needs is a true flagship device.
